Wednesday Wisdom : Strawberry

As a kid I remember seeing strawberry in pictures only as it wasn’t a local produce but things changed a decade and a half ago and farmers started growing this red gem. Now it’s a common fruit Alhamdulillah. For the first time we tried growing it in our kitchen garden and it worked! I’m really amazed how much satisfaction you can get by just planting seeds and watching things grow. So many reasons to be thankful for. I have posted Strawberry Sauce recipe which is a very versatile way of incorporating this fruit in desserts, salad and shakes. For something special there is Strawberry Iced Tea.

We usually do not pay attention to the benefits of natural foods and find it more convenient to just pick a packet of chips, a candy bar or an ice-cream. Being aware of what we are eating and why we are eating can help us in so many ways. In an attempt to make healthy eating more appealing here are some nutritional facts and benefits of strawberry that I once share:

  • Good For Memory: High levels of antioxidants in fruits such as strawberries can boost memory and protect against mental decline.
  • Good For Bone Health: Vitamin C and K and magnesium can improve bone health.
  • Good For Skin: Vitamin C in strawberries are important in the production of collagen. They also contain anti inflammatory enzymes ans antioxidants which help slow the rate that skin ages.
  • Good For Fatigue: Strawberries are low in calories, fat free and high in fibre. They contain nitrate to promote healthy blood flow to fight fatigue. Strawberries are good for immune system too.
  • Good For Heart: Researchers have found that having three servings of strawberries or blueberries can reduce the risk of heart attack by 32 percent.They also help burn stored fat.
